June 23, 2008Incoming Assistant Governor, Mark Waltz officiated the "Pass the Gavel" ceremonies in which incoming officers were sworn to their duties. Greg Bowman will assume duties as Club President and will preside over the June 30 meeting. June 16, 2008Rotary honored the NERS with its annual Vacational Service Award. NERS members were hosted by the club and recieved certificates and a plaque honoring their vocation. Don Silverthorne was presented the Rotarian of the Year Award as well. June 2, 2008DGND Jim Russell worked with the group to update our club's long range plan. Members wrote their top three five-year plan issues on "sticky notes" and organized them by the Effective Club Model. Discussion of the model and its implications took place in the process. May 19, 2008The club hosted scholarship recipiants Rachael and Ryan Miller and and their families. These students each received $500 scholarships from Rotary and both spoke of their plans to use the money in their education. A short business meeting followed the dinner with guests. May 12, 2008West School teachers, Marca Porter and Janet Addy spoke to the club about a planned summer literacy program for which they are seeking funds. Elementary students will sign up to receive a book to read in the mail. Students will read the book, answer questions about the reading, and mail it back. The program is designed to help students stay active in their learning during the summer vacation. May 5, 2008American Cancer Society Representative, Helene Moncman explained the Quality of Life initiatives her organization has in place to assist those dealing with cancer. During her talk, the club expressed interest in partnering with the ACS to make low or no cost mammograms available at our October Health Screening. April 28, 2008The club held its regular business meeting at April's Country Kitch'n. Updates from each Avenue of Service Committee were heard. Emphasis on the need to continue support for the Rotary Foundation and to grow membership. April 21, 2008Rotarian Duane Smith presented a program on the ABC's of Rotary. He highlighted the history and progress of Rotary pointing out that it has grown to 532 Districts with 32,912 Clubs and 1,210,648 Rotarians worldwide. Duane also spoke of Rotary's Polio erradication efforts. April 11 & 12, 2008Newcomerstown Rotarians Jim Russell and Dick Breneman attended the District 6650 District Conference in Canton. Both were highly interested in the Conference for planning purposes. Our club will be the host club for the District in 2011. This year's conference was enjoyable, with several excellent sessions. Stand out sessions would include a presentation by one of the survivors of the 911 attack on the World Trade Center and also presentations on youth programs in our District. April 7, 2008The club held its annual Farmer's Night, hosting nearly 15 area farmers at supper to honor their vocation. Farmers and Rotarians shared a good meal and plenty of fellowship. Sue Reid of the Canal Corridor Coalition presented a program on their plans for Tuscarawas County and their work on the local Buckhorn Trail. The newly hired County Parks Coordinator spoke about her new role and her desire to work with local organizations like Rotary in developing and maintaining greenspace in the county. April 5, 2008Rotary of Newcomerstown served 203 individuals during their semiannual Health Screening. Almost 100% of club membership turned out to serve at this event which provides low cost screening for our community. A full panel of blood tests are offered with additional A1C, Thyroid, and PSA tests as options. Tests are performed by Coshocton County Memorial Hospital. April 3, 2008Don Norman hosted the Brazillian GSE Team in our community. Carl Plants, Jim Russell, an Dick Breneman joined the group at various times during their visit. The team toured Longaberger Basket Company, Boltaron Plastics, both historical museums, and the local library. As usual the visit was highlighted with lunch at Popeye's in Dresden and a catered dinner with the Newcomerstown Rotarins and partners. The GSE Team presented a program after dinner. March 31, 2008The club met at April's Country Kitch'n for its monthly Business Meeting. Each Committee met and brought updates to the floor. Members voted to send $250 to the Wooster club for the Kenya Water Project. March 17, 2008RYLA student John Warner and his mother were present to review the RYLA conference. John expressed his approval for the program and encouraged the club to continue its participation in the program. John shared details of his activities at RYLA and generated a discussion about the need for additional student leadership opportunities at Newcomerstown High School. Members present voted to adjust the upcoming schedule by removing the meeting set for April 14 due to the significant amount of Rotary activities set for the first two weeks of April. Members are encouraged to register for at least one District Conference activity. March 10, 2008President Don welcomed Rotarians and covered the upcoming club calendar.Rotarian Jeff Orr shared his passion for foreign automobiles with the club. Jef presented interesting facts about automotive logos and gave the club a quiz on logo recognition. Jeff shared stories about cars he has collected and automobile shows he has attended. March 3, 2008The club met at April's Country Kitch'n. President Don discussed the District Conference information he has received from District Governor Dennis Huffman and offered registration information to all present. Jim Russell conducted a program that overviewed the three year process for assuming the District Governor role. Jim will be District Governor in the 2010-11 Rotary year. The Newcomerstown Club will serve as his "home club" which oblgates it to perform some specific duties, particularly related to the District Conference. These were discussed and members present voted to set aside some "buffer" funding to meet these obligations. Don Norman reminded the club that a work day will take place on the Buckhorn Trail on Saturday March 8. Also the GSE Team will be hosted in Newcomerstown on April 3. February 25, 2008This was our monthly business meeting. Members voted to give $200 towards a cultural exchange at Hocking Technical College. Granddaughter of Don Norman will be traveling to England to perform in the musical "Hair". $250 was approved for sponsorship of a Youth League baseball team this summer. International Service Committee reported that GSE team from Brazil will spend the day with us on April 3. Club agreed to host as we did last year, with a supper in the "Main Street" part of the museum. February 18, 2008This meeting was our annual Valentine's Day celebration. Good music, dance lessons and prizes were the highlights of the evening. Club Service Committee persons Bill Bower and Debbie Fornash provided entertainment and decorations to enhance the celebration. Rotarian Packy McFarland and his partner Natalie were in attendance. President Don bestowed "Honorary Membership" to Packy. This will allow him to continue to receive the Rotarian Magazine and attend any meetings he chooses to while removing attendance and dues obligations. February 11, 2008The evening's program was conducted by our Vocational Service Committee. Newcomerstown High School student, Amber Gibson, was present with her mother to preview her trip to District 6650 RYLA on February 22, 23, and 24. Rotarian Duane Smith offered insight into "The Four Way Test" as well as the "Pillars of Character" which are both used as a foundation for the RYLA program. Student, John Warner, was unable to attend the meeting due to a conflict with his Thespian activities. He will, however, attend the RYLA weekend and our follow up session in March. February 4, 2008After sharing a meal and fellowship at April's Country Kitch'n, the club enjoyed a very interesting program by Stevie Jo Bliss. Stevie Jo related details of her season spent with the professional theater company responsible for "Trumpet in the Land" at Schoenbrunn. She spoke of long hours, multiple roles, and multiple productions all adding up to very challenging work. She also spoke of lasting friendships and close ties developed during her connection with the program. January 28, 2008The monthly Business Meeting included a summary of our attendance at the Spring assembly as well as Avenue of Service meetings and reports. Club Service will host a Valentines party on February 18, Community Service will follow up on the District Simplified Grant and is considering another community project, Vocational Service will host RYLA studentsJohn Warner and Amber Gibson on February 11, and International Service is looking for an international project as well as planning for the GSE visit in April. January 21, 2008The club met at the Carlysle Inn in Sugarcreek for the District 6650 traveling Spring Assembly. district Governor Dennis Huffman hosted dinner and an agenda oriented to encouraging clubs to participate in District Youth Programs, Recognition Programs, Literacy Programs and Foundation Programs. January 14, 2008Jim Russell and Jill Little presented a program on the Thomas R. Little Memorial Fund. The fund has recently received 501-C3 status from the IRS meaning all contributions to it are tax exempt. Jim spoke about the purpose of the fund in terms of furthering Tom's desire to see good things happen in Newcomerstown. He encouraged Rotarians to contribute to this local charity. Funds will be used to support scholarships and community service projects. January 7, 2008Karen Shepherd presented a program on her Massage Therapy business. She highlighted the physical and mental health benefits of massage therapy. She also contrasted her profession with that of chiropractors and discussed her training and certification. November 26, 2007The club held its monthly business meeting. Members voted to match the $1000 grant received from the District so that we can contribute $2000 towards the refurbishment of the picnic shelter at Cy Young Park. Poinsettia orders are due to Don Norman before Friday November 30. Plans are underway for a Valentines's Party in February. November 12, 2007Five Past District Governors with four of their spouses, the District Governor, the District Governor Elect, and the District Governor Nominee were in attendance to announce the selection of Rotarian Jim Russell to be the District Governor Nominee Designate. As such, Jim will be in line to become Governor of District 6650 in the Rotary year 2010-2011. PDG Dallas Woodall, as chair of the Nominating Committee, made the announcement. In his remarks Jim thanked the District and the Club for their support in his nomination and stated that he is looking forward to a successful Governorship and the opportunity to work in Rotary as a Past District Governor in 2012. Don Norman presented the 2007 Poinsettia Sales program. November 5, 2007Club celebrated Fall Harvest Night with partners. Bill Bower officiated over the entertainment program which was enjoyed by all. October 29, 2007This was the night for our monthly business meeting. All Avenue of Service committees met and reported current status of projects and fundraisers. The club will not have an Exchange Student candidate this year as our student has developed health issues. We are planning Fall Harvest and Christmas meetings for November 5 and December 10. Members of West Lafayette club were present to sell raffle tickets for their current fundraiser. gary Chaney reported on Health Screen results and current treasury. October 22, 2007Carl Plants presented a brief program about his collection of Newcomerstown related historical items. His collection is extensive. Carl brought two plates that were issued to comemorate 1914 as Newcomerstown's Centennial Year. He spends a great deal of his personal time attending auctions and flea markets seeking out Newcomerstown memorabelia. October 8, 2007Rick Roe presented an interesting program about his personal history and his chiropractic practice here in Newcomerstown. He handed out materials explaining the amount of education required to become a chiroprator and some of the benefits of this medical alternative. Rick showed his passion for his vocation and encouraged all present to consider high quality nutritional suppliments as well as the potential good that chiropractic might do them. October 1, 2007Gary Chaney presented a short program on the arrangements for the upcoming Health Fair. Several vendors have committed to participate and the West School will be available on Friday October 5 for setup at 7PM. Jim Russell will create registration forms and Dick Breneman will create labels for the Health Screening. September 24, 2007The club held its monthly business meeting at April's Country Kitch'n. Each committee met and discussed current projects before reporting to the group on their status. No new projects were proposed. Upcoming deadlines for RYLA and supplies purchased for Adult Literacy were put forward by the Vocational Service committee. Members got a brief update on the Health Fair scheduled for October 6. Gary Chaney reported a door prize had been purchased. September 17, 2007The club met at April's Country Kitch'n. The evenings program was presented by Rotarian Jeff Orr. Jeff shared his vocational experience with the club, providing insights and details of his position as Regional Sales Manager forVolk Protective Products. He explained the company's history, organization, products and objectives. Jeff also detailed his responsibilities as Regional Sales Manager. President Don informed the group that he intends to ask other individuals in the club to give similar presentations in an effort to promote deeper fellowship and understanding. Before closing the meeting, the club approved payment for half of the major doorprize to be given at the Health Fair. September 10, 2007The club met at April's Country Kitch'n. The program speaker was unable to attend due to a close friend's accidental death. President Don took the opportunity to review items covered in the Division III Foundation and Membership seminars held in Sugarcereek on August 28. Foundation and reasons for giving to the Foundation were discussed as were the learnings from the Membership session. An interesting discussion about the effects of meeting times on membership ensued. Prior to adjournment, Gary Chaney asked for the club to pay half the cost of a major doorprize for the upcoming Health Fair. August 27, 2007The club held its monthly business meeting at April's Country Kitch'n. Members were reminded that the Division III Foundation and Membership meeting will take place at Dutch Valley Restaurant on Wednesday August 29 at 6:00 PM. Committees met and reported. Vocational Service asked and received approval for $250 to spend on supplies for the ABLE adult literacy program in Newcomerstown. International Service updated on the status of Bonnie Fornash applying to be in the Youth Exchange Program, reminded Rotarians to seek out potential team members for this year's GSE to Brazil, and aske all present to consider participating in the Every Rotarian Every Year program for the Foundation. Community Service reported we are waiting to hear the results of our DSG application for the shelter project at Cy Young Park. They are also looking into the village's flag pole project and the United Way Day of Caring. Club Service announced that we will hold a Fall Harvest Program again this year on November 5 and that the Christmas Party will be held December 10. Bill Bower reminded all present to work on developing potential new members. August 20, 2007District Governor Dennis Huffman attended our meeting at April's Country Kitch'n. He presented his ideas on Rotary and the need for Rotarians to take on the tasks that make sense for their communities. He emphasized the need for membership growth and for all Rotarians to make a difference in the world by supporting the Rotary Foundation. Also attending were Assistant Governor Keith Lands and Rotarian Katherine Miller of the West Lafayette Club. President Don presented DG Dennis with a club banner and the most recent issue of our Community Calendar. August 13, 2007The club met at the Temperance Tavern Museum Main Street Annex. Rotarians shared fellowship during a pizza meal and adjorned to work on our Sam Douglas Saloon display. The brass plaque and Rotary Wheel have been mounted on a Walnut board and Dick Breneman will be getting that mounted to a floor stand to be incorporated into the display. Latice work at the top of the bar was replaced. August 6, 2007Newcomerstown Rotary held its annual Family Picnic at Cy Young Park. We had an excellent turnout with serveral families taking advantage of the swimming pool after our meal. Don Norman cooked the bratwurst and hotdogs that were provided by the club and many delectable dishes brought by attendees were shared. President Don took the opportunity to thank Club Service Chair Bill Bower for his work to make this a successful event. Gary Chaney was acknowledged for purchasing the items provided by the club. July 30, 2007The club met at April's Country Kitch'n. Nic and Mike Grewell attended to discuss Nic's planned Eagle Scout Project at Cy Young Park. He will be upgrading the hiking trails that Rotary sponsored some years ago. Members gave their approval for the project. President Don reviewed the upcoming calendar of events to be posted on the Events page of this site. Service committees met to review and accept their goals for the coming year. Members voted to continue the ad in the Fall Sports Program ($55 to the Athletic Boosters). A walnut plaque is being made for our exhibit at the museum with the brass plates purchased last year. The matter of funds for the refurbishment of a park shelter at Cy Young Park was tabled. Members voted to provide $50 to be contributed in memory of Rotarians or family members who die. Elaine Mayenschein will research the library's need for childrens books so that the club can contribute them in the name of guest speakers. July 23, 2007The weekly meeting was held at April's Country Kitch'n. The club welcomed our newest member, Rick Roe. President Don reviewed the upcoming meeting schedule and turned the podium over to Jim Russell who discussed his recent excursion to the RI Convention in Salt Lake City. Literature from the convention was displayed and a brief review of convention highlights was presented. Two project ideas, both related to families and children, were given in some detail. President Don reminded members that we need to discuss gifts for speakers at next week's business meeting. The club will also consider its process for issuing condolences to insure that this is done with some consistency. July 16, 2007Our weekly meeting was held at April's Country Kitch'n. Jodi Garbrandt of Big Brothers and Big Sisters was present to discuss the youth mentoring program and to ask for adult volunteers from Newcomerstown. Currently 90 children are on a waitng list for mentors. 40 of those are in Tuscarawas County and 4 of those are in Newcomerstown. Jodi discussed the benefits of mentoring a child for both the adult and the child. In other business, the club voted to contribute $100 toward the shipping cost to deliver 4000 books to libraries in New Orleans. Gary Chaney suggested that we need to convene a Health Fair meeting with representatives from all the participating organizations. Health Fair is to be held October 6 at the West School. Members welcomed Elaine Mayenschein back from her leave of absence. Next week, the program will be a review of the RI Convention in Salt Lake City. July 9, 2007The club met at April's Country Kitch'n. Local business person, Ron Stein, was present to talk about his new framing and trophy business. President Don Silverthorne opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and Bill Bower gave the invocation. Upcoming meeting dates and programs were discussed. A motion was presented and passed to accept Dr. Agricola as an Honorary Member and to forgive any outstanding fees he may owe. Jim Russell will research requirements for documenting Honorary Members. Several business items were referred to committee for the upcoming Business Meeting . Treasurer, Gary Chaney, presented a financial report for the 2006 - 2007 year and highlighted the fact that after all revenue and expenses were accounted for, the club's treasury increased by about $2500. Next meeting will be July 16 at April's Country Kitch'n. May 2007We are in the closing weeks of the 2006/2007 Rotary Year. Incoming Club President Don Silverthorne is attending trainings, selecting club officers, and creating plans to have his new year begin on July 1. Our club has had a very productive twelve months and was recognized for its performance at the District 6650 Conference held in April in Youngstown with an "OSCAR" presented by District Governor Geoff Goll. The club will also recieve a "Presidential Citation" from Rotary International President Bill Boyd. These recognitions are well desreved and reflect the commitment of our membership to maintain an effective Rotary presence in Newcomerstown. Our major accomplishment is to have grown our membership by a net one Rotarian after suffering the loss of a member in July of 2006. Our newest members are Debbie Fornash and Ryan Styer. March 2007Over the past three months, the club has been very active. We held our annual "Sweethearts Party" with partners and were well entertained by Club Service Chairman Bill Bower and a video program featuring the history of MGM musicals. We had a record attendance at the District 6650 Mid-Year Assembly in January at Salem. Two Newcomerstown High School Juniors, Bonnie Fornash and Ion Morrow, attended the District RYLA conference as did Club President Jim Russell. This weekend conference focused on developing leadership characteristics for youths. Our students presented their experience at a regular meeting after the conference and recommended that the club continue to send students to RYLA. The club began discussions with the Newcomerstown Chamber of Commerce about coordinating our Fall health screening with their annual Health Fair. Preparations were made to switch lab service providers at our Spring 2007 Health Screening. |
